Position description
The Civil & Environmental Engineering Department at the University of California, Berkeley is seeking an Assistant/Associate Project Scientist to work with Professor Joshua Apte in the area of mobile air pollution monitoring. The Apte Research Group uses methods from chemistry, environmental engineering, aerosol science, exposure assessment, and environmental health to understand the relationships between emissions, atmospheric transformations, concentrations, human exposures, and health effects.
- Contribute as a collaborating scientist to planning and overseeing air pollution field campaigns, especially using the UC Berkeley mobile air pollution laboratory, fixed-site instrumentation deployments, and other air pollution measurement modalities.
- Under the direction of Prof. Apte, provide day-to-day oversight of the UC Berkeley mobile air pollution laboratory and its associated measurement instrumentation, especially during intensive field studies.
- Train and mentor undergraduate students and assist in the supervision, training and mentorship of graduate students and postdocs in field air pollution research.
- Analyze and interpret air pollution measurement datasets, develop reports and communicate findings in peer-reviewed research.
- Sustain ongoing operation of the mobile air pollution laboratory, including planning and executing maintenance, protocols, upgrades, and data management.
- Contribute to developing research proposals and securing funding for air quality research projects, especially in regard to mobile monitoring.
- Assist in the development of individual research lines within the overall mission of the Apte Research Group and the air pollution mobile monitoring projects.
Qualifications
PhD or equivalent international degree
- PhD in Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, or a similar field with relevant experience in atmospheric measurements.
- Prior postdoc experience, including at least 2 years of post-PhD experience conducting field research in air pollution monitoring.
- Experience designing, implementing, and supervising air pollution field research.
- Extensive experience in advanced instrumentation for characterizing the chemical composition and physical properties of gas- and particle-phase air pollution including Proton Transfer Reaction Mass Spectrometry.
- Experience in hardware and software engineering for the development and sustained operation of mobile atmospheric measurement platforms.
- Experience in designing, conducting, and interpreting mobile measurements for atmospheric field research.
- Knowledge of scientific programming languages for data analysis and database management (e.g. Python, R, SQL).
- Knowledge of air pollution sources among communities in Northern California.
- Experience in capacity building / training / mentorship and working with local community groups in atmospheric science and air pollution research.
- Publication of peer reviewed journal articles in high-quality journals.
