Position description
The Department of Nuclear Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a tenured/tenure-track position at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor level, starting July 1st, 2025. We seek candidates who will develop impactful, productive, and novel research programs, will commit to excellence in graduate and undergraduate education, and will contribute to the Department’s goals of shaping the next generation of leaders in nuclear engineering, pushing the boundaries of science, and serving our society. The ideal candidate will outline a vision for research and scholarship that will advance radiation science and technology, radiation detection and instrumentation, radiation monitoring, and can contribute the health physics area, and related areas. An ability to interface with other disciplines (nuclear physics, nuclear data, thermal hydraulics, nuclear materials, neutron transport, etc.) is highly desired.
In addition to developing a vibrant, cutting-edge research program, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach and develop undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in Radiation Detection and Instrumentation disciplines and to mentor students at all levels. Candidates will have to demonstrate a commitment to excel in teaching and mentoring.
Candidates will also have to demonstrate how they plan to contribute through research, teaching, and mentoring to the core values of the Nuclear Engineering Department: integrity, excellence, dignity, and justice. Candidates should know that financial and in-kind resources are available to pursue activities that help accelerate our efforts to achieve our diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging goals, with the full backing of the College of Engineering. Examples of ongoing programs in the College are available at: engineering.berkeley.edu/diversity. Details of the Department's programs and resources dedicated to ensuring a welcoming, fair, and inclusive environment can be found at: nuc.berkeley.edu/equity-and-inclusion/.

The Department of Nuclear Engineering at UC Berkeley, established in 1958, is the only nuclear engineering program in the State of California, and only one of two on the West Coast. It is actively involved in major multi-institutional research initiatives in such areas as reactor safety and licensing, thermal hydraulics, nuclear data, neutronics, nuclear materials, nuclear waste management, medical physics, nonproliferation, and applied nuclear physics. The Department of Nuclear Engineering hosts a vibrant and growing community of faculty and students and enjoys close relationships with Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Los Alamos National Laboratory, and Sandia National Laboratories. The Department has a strong tradition of interdisciplinary research and education and seeks to further develop strategic alliances with related academic units in the College of Engineering, research centers, national laboratories, and industrial partners. The rich environment afforded by the excellence in engineering at Berkeley, the resources of the national laboratories, and the strength of other departments in the College provides fertile ground for further growth and development of Nuclear Engineering at Berkeley.
