Position description

The Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Junior/Assistant Specialist in the Hariharan Lab, in the area of molecular genetics of growth regulation and development in Drosophila.

The Hariharan Lab uses Drosophila to investigate the mechanisms that regulate tissue growth and regeneration. Specifically, the lab aims to identify genes that regulate developmental or regenerative growth. This is accomplished by disrupting the function of genes using chemical mutagenesis, RNAi or CRISPR and then evaluating the effect of this disruption on tissue growth and regeneration. In addition to using genetic approaches the lab uses single-cell RNAseq to identify the characteristics of individual cells that participate in growth or regeneration.

The duties of the position include:
• Conducting research that investigates growth and regeneration of Drosophila imaginal discs.
• Conducting genetic experiments in Drosophila that involve the setting up, execution and interpretation of genetic crosses. Many experiments involve the dissection of Drosophila larval tissues and adult tissues, their analysis by immunohistochemistry, and visualization using confocal microscopy. The technique of visualization of gene expression using the hybridization chain reaction (HCR) is routinely used in the laboratory.
• Using single-cell RNA seq data to generate hypothesis-driven genetic experiments
• Use of software that uses the R programming language to analyze single-cell data
• Preparing data for verbal presentation, and figures and manuscripts, for submission to peer-reviewed journals.
• Conducting research in a collaborative environment with an appreciation for lab safety and an environment that values equity, inclusion and diversity.
• Assisting and participating in the maintenance and running of the lab

This position provides full benefits.
