Position description

The IGI is presently seeking a highly motivated Assistant Project Scientist to perform research on molecular systems enabling the therapeutic delivery of genome editing reagents. This interdisciplinary work will be performed as part of a team at UC Berkeley, centered in the laboratory of Ross Wilson, IGI Scientific Director of Therapeutic Delivery.

Specific research activities will involve chemical biology and nanomaterial science techniques to generate novel protein based delivery platforms supporting development of improved CRISPR-based genetic therapies. Major tasks will include material characterization, protein modification, chemical biology, quality assessment, and experimental design of in vitro and in vivo experiments.

The Project Scientist will also collaborate with IGI investigators at UCB, UCSF, and other IGI-affiliated universities in the effort to advance the delivery of genome editing for therapeutic use. In addition to their own efforts, this Project Scientist will guide genome editing efforts of one or more research technicians, postdoctoral scholars and/or graduate students. The Project Scientist will report directly to Ross Wilson.

Duties for this position include:

• Obtain consistent and reliable data.
• Manage multiple projects and tasks in parallel in order to meet program-based milestones.
• Train one or more postdoctoral researchers, technicians and/or graduate students.
• Collaborate with principal investigators, postdocs, and students at partner universities and provide input to their research teams.
• Design and develop useful and practical intellectual property.
• Contribute to high-quality, high-impact publications in peer-reviewed journals.
• Attend scientific and technical conferences to discuss accomplishments at the IGI and establish relationships with other leaders in the field.

Qualifications

Preferred qualifications

• Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Biomedical engineering, Bioengineering, Biochemistry or related discipline and a minimum of 2 years of post-doctoral and/or industrial experience in a relevant field.
• Demonstrated expertise in drug delivery and material design, including experience with bioconjugation chemistry: click chemistry, disulfide chemistry, etc.
• Understanding and knowledge of polypeptide design and synthesis.
• Proficiency in the characterization of nanomaterials, including aptitude in dynamic light scattering, zeta potential, and/or transmission electron microscopy techniques.
• Proficiency in analyzing and characterizing chemically modified proteins using techniques such as SDS-PAGE, Western blotting and Bradford assay.
• Proficient in the preparation of CRISPR ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complexes for genome editing experiments as well as genetic manipulation of mammalian cells using site-specific endonucleases.
• Experience in assessing genetic manipulation and cell specific delivery through in vitro and in vivo assays such as DNA sequencing (e.g. Sanger, amplicon-based NGS) and/or flow cytometry.
• Experience with tissue culture of mammalian cell lines, neuron derived cultures, and primary cells relevant to genetic therapeutic development (e.g. primary hepatocytes, SH-SY5Y cells, primary fibroblasts) as well as pertinent animal models (e.g. Ai9, Ai14, or various disease models).
• Experience using high-throughput screening of reagents for genome editing efficiency.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate with, to efficiently work with, and to maintain external collaborations with a diverse group of researchers.
• Must be innovative and able to synergize various ideas and approaches, while exercising sound judgment to evaluate and take acceptable risks.
• Ability and willingness to travel occasionally as required.
