Position description
The GSI Teaching and Resource Center in the Graduate Division at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a non-tenure track lecturer to teach one section of Language Proficiency (Lan Pro) 380, Oral English Proficiency for Prospective GSIs per semester. This course is designed to meet the needs of prospective multilingual graduate student instructors (GSIs) and focuses on oral English skills needed for effective communication in the U.S. classroom. The course consists of weekly assignments, discussion, group work, and recorded oral presentations. In addition to three hours of in-class instruction, students will meet weekly with the instructor for small-group or individualized instruction. The course is required or recommended for all prospective GSIs who do not meet the oral English proficiency requirement for GSI appointments.
General Responsibilities include in-class instruction; small-group/individualized instruction; development of course syllabus and teaching materials; student assessment and grading; office hours.
About the Graduate Division and the GSI Teaching & Resource Center
The Graduate Division works to guide and assist students from the moment of admission, through the various milestones of their progress, to the completion of their degree requirements. We provide academic, personal, and professional support services that are vital to the everyday well-being and life-long successes of Berkeley master’s, professional, and doctoral students. As the authoritative resource and chief advocate for graduate education, the Graduate Division ensures the equitable administration of policies governing graduate studies across Berkeley’s 14 schools and colleges. As the administrative arm of the Academic Senate’s Graduate Council, we partner with the faculty and staff of each program and the deans of each school and college to maintain the world-renowned quality of Berkeley’s graduate education.
The GSI Teaching & Resource Center, reporting to the Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Dean of the Graduate Division, is responsible for preparing GSIs campuswide for teaching. The Center’s Language Proficiency Program provides courses, consultations, and testing for multilingual graduate students who need to demonstrate oral English proficiency to be appointed as GSIs.

UC Lecturers are academic appointees in an organized bargaining unit and are exclusively represented by the American Federation of Teachers - Unit 18.
For those who are not US citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (such as a US visa that allows employment) is required by the start date of the position. The department is unable to provide a visa/work permit.
Qualifications
Advanced or equivalent international degree
-Three or more years of teaching and assessment experience in higher education
-Master’s degree in one of the following fields: TESOL, TESL, TEFL, TEAL
-Three or more years of oral English proficiency teaching and assessment experience in higher education
-Knowledge of current research and practices in oral English proficiency teaching and assessment, including listening, fluency, grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary development, public speaking, and interactive communication skills
-Expertise in English pronunciation assessment and instruction using an intelligibility approach
-Demonstrated effectiveness in classroom teaching, small group facilitation, and individualized instruction
-Experience with curriculum development and course planning in higher education
-Excellent interpersonal, written communication, and presentation skills
-Demonstrated ability to effectively collaborate in a dynamic, team-based environment
-Well developed organizational skills and demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail in their work
-Experienced with common desktop applications, such as the Microsoft Office and Google suites
-Evidence of ongoing professional development
-Experience working with diverse student populations and demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion
-Experience working with International graduate student instructors at a research university
-Familiarity with common standardized tests of oral English proficiency, including TOEFL iBT and IELTS
-Experience with instructional design and development of online or hybrid, blended, and traditional courses in a Canvas environment
