Position description

The UC Berkeley FHL Vive Center for Enhanced Reality is hiring an Assistant Specialist in the areas of robotics and machine learning.

The main goals of the center are to sponsor critical fundamental research and high-impact applications in the emerging fields of Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Artificial Intelligence (AI), and at the same time serve as the central hub to facilitate the deployment of disruptive VR, AR, and AI technologies across the Berkeley campus for cross-disciplinary research and education.

We aim to achieve these goals by offering seed grant to our faculty, supervising and facilitating student research activities, and fostering external industry partnerships with other stakeholders.

The day-to-day duties of this position are to advance the development of machine learning-based autonomous systems, including ground vehicles and robot arms, using state-of-the-art control and computer vision algorithms, with applications for human-machine collaboration such as assembling, grasping, and playing Ping-Pong together with humans. The Assistant Specialist will also coordinate the collaboration in the lab between undergraduate and graduate students who work under the same project, and report timely project progress to their PIs. The Berkeley-owned ground vehicles include Indy Autonomous Vehicle and Leo Rover platforms for the applications of high-speed racing and off-road navigation. The Berkeley-owned robot arms include Kuka.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent international degree.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

Master's degree (or international equivalent) or bachelor's degree (or international equivalent) plus two years of research experience.

Preferred qualifications

Master's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, and machine learning or related field.
Work as a team member in a large and multidisciplinary project that includes undergraduate students, Ph.D researchers, and faculty members.
Professional training in developing machine learning algorithms, especially in reinforcement learning, large language models, and computer vision algorithms.
Proficient in C++ and Python programming.
The ability to utilize GitHub and/or other project management software to monitor the progress and milestones of the project and conduct quality assurance of the developed software.
