Position description
Michael Manga and Mengsu Hu are jointly recruiting a postdoc at UC Berkeley in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences (EPS) to carry out numerical analysis of fracture growth and propagation as a result of coupled thermal-hydro-mechanical-chemical (THMC) processes in a wide range of Earth science and engineering problems. The successful candidate will join a collaborative team of researchers at UC Berkeley and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL).
The Postdoctoral Scholar – Employee will develop and/or apply 3D numerical modeling to analyze fracture growth and propagation critically and subcritically due to mechanical, hydraulic (e.g. hydraulic fracturing), thermal (e.g., thermal fracturing), and chemical (e.g., subcritical crack growth) loading and their coupled effects in different types of Earth materials (e.g., argillite and crystalline rocks, ice). The primary project is to collaborate with a multidisciplinary group to conduct numerical analysis of nuclear waste disposal in multi-barrier systems where fractures may be present. The Postdoctoral Scholar, depending on background and interests, could also consider laboratory and field studies to address other Earth science questions involving subcritical crack growth in rocks and ice. In addition, the modeling capabilities may be applied to analyze, design, and optimize the efficiency of geothermal energy and hydrogen production in the deep subsurface.
