Position description

The Department Environmental Science, Policy and Management at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Project Scientist with the Berkeley Food Institute in the area of Agricultural Economics, Environmental Economics and/or Rural Development.

The successful candidate will contribute to the intellectual and research mission of the Rausser College of Natural Resources (RCNR) and the Department of Environmental Science Policy and Management (ESPM) by conducting research related to agricultural and rural development in California, Mexico and beyond, as well as attracting multidisciplinary collaborations and funding opportunities on these and related topics.

The candidate will work with faculty, other researchers and students in RCNR and ESPM and other higher learning institutions in advancing and creating knowledge related to agriculture, climate change impacts and policy design and implementation related to those areas. The successful candidate is expected to work in existing programs, including an evaluation of California’s Farm to School Program. In this research, the candidate will assess how involvement in farm to school supply chains affects farm-level economic outcomes and organizational structure. The candidate will also conduct research on how climate change affects the health and wellbeing of agricultural workers, such as during extreme events like heat waves. Oversight of graduate and undergraduate students will be expected as part of these projects. The candidate will also develop new research programs by exploring funding opportunities and developing strategic partnerships with both academic and non-academic stakeholders. Of particular interest is pursuing Mexico-California academic collaborative efforts related to the topics above.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

PhD (or equivalent international degree)

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

At least 10 years of experience completing research and field work on agricultural systems in California, Mexico and other geographical areas.

Preferred qualifications

• PhD (or equivalent international degree) in agricultural economics, environmental economics, environmental sciences or related field.
• Expertise in agricultural production systems, agricultural supply chain analysis and food markets.
• Expertise in the analysis of the socio-economic impacts of climate change in agriculture including but not limited to the impacts of extreme events on agricultural production and farm labor.
• Experience in working as part of multidisciplinary teams including, but not limited to the disciplines of agroecology, climate science, agricultural and environmental economics, public health and others.
• Ability to oversee and work with graduate and undergraduate students seeking to improve their academic careers.
• Knowledge of data collection methods including sampling techniques, survey preparation, completion of IRB protocols, use of software (i.e. Stata, Qualtrics, other).
• Publication record in agricultural economics, public health and/or socio-economic impacts of climate change.
• Fully bilingual and bicultural: Spanish/English
• Ability to create, organize and work with teams that are inclusive of Black, Indigenous, People of Color and other marginalized groups.
• Demonstrated ability to seek funding for research activities that align with the RCNR and ESPM mission.
• Experience in conducting project evaluation processes.
