Position description

The Department of Astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for lecturer positions in multiple astronomy courses. We seek a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach courses in astronomy in the academic year and summer.

Teaching responsibilities: We are seeking outstanding lecturers who can teach one or more courses in the undergraduate Astronomy/Astrophysics curriculum. There is an immediate need for an instructor for the Optical and Infrared Astronomy Laboratory (AY 120) in the fall, a rigorous laboratory class meant to introduce undergraduate astronomy majors to data taking and data analysis.

General duties: teaching responsibilities, holding office hours, developing syllabi, assignments, writing exams, supervising Graduate Student Instructors and maintaining a course website. Other duties may be assigned by the Chair as necessary.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

The minimum qualification required to be considered an applicant for the position is the completion of a Bachelor’s (or equivalent international degree) at the time of application.

Preferred qualifications

We prefer applicants have a masters or doctoral degree in astronomy or physics. Past teaching experience as a lead or assistant instructor is also preferred. Practicing astronomers or astronomy educators are also preferred.
