Position description

The Department of Italian Studies at UC Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach course(s), should a need arise, in Italian Language.

The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending upon the needs of the Department, and in some cases will be zero.

Applicants may be selected from this pool for two calendar years. This posting will remain open through October 14, 2016 to accommodate upcoming course needs and new applicants. [When instructors are needed for a Fall semester, the initial review date is typically in March or April; for a Spring semester, the initial review date of applications is typically in October or November. For a Summer Session, the review date is typically in November or December. Review dates will be updated as needed.] Positions typically start at the beginning of the semester (in January for Spring; in August for Fall), in May, June or July for Summer Sessions), and appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance.

General Duties:

In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), and interacting with students via email.

Basic Qualification (required by date of application):
• Completion of all Ph.D. (or equivalent) degree requirements except the dissertation

Additional Qualification (required by employment start date):
• Completed Ph.D (or equivalent) in Italian Studies or a related field
• Fluency in Italian Language

Preferred qualifications:
• Training in second language pedagogy
• Demonstrated experience teaching Italian language

Salary:
• Commensurate with college teaching experience, in accordance with the current Unit-18 lecturer salary scale and its provisions

Letters of recommendation are not required for applications to this pool. If reference letters are later solicited by the Department, they will be treated as confidential per University of California policy and California state

The department may later request teaching and/or research statements, evidence of teaching effectiveness, such as past course syllabi, teaching evaluations, etc., but they are not required at time of application.
