Spanish Lecturer Pool

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of California, Berkeley invites applicants for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach elementary and intermediate Spanish language courses should an opening arise. The number of positions varies from semester to semester, depending on the needs of the departments. Positions may range from 40% time to 100% time.

Due to COVID 19 UC Berkeley has begun the fall semester with fully remote instruction. UC Berkeley is prepared to implement hybrid and/or flexible modes of instruction as soon as public health conditions allow. Remote instruction requires an online course to be designed from the outset for delivery via distance-learning methods. Instructors must have internet access and be prepared to adjust pedagogical approaches with a remote setting and use new teaching tools. Department policy requires instructors to create and maintain a bcourses site.

In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, grading assignments, advising students, preparing course materials (e .g . syllabus ) and communicating and teaching through the course website in Canvas.

Basic Qualifications (at time of application):
Candidates must have a Master’s Degree (or equivalent international degree).

Additional Qualifications (by start date):
Native or near native fluency in Spanish and English.

For those who are not US citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (such as a US visa that allows employment) is required by the start date of the position.

Preferred qualifications:
Experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college level in the US. Familiarity with college-level language programs, and relevant teaching experience using communicative language-teaching methodologies.

Salary is based on an annual full-time salary rate of a minimum of $56,381 for positions ranging from 40% to 100% each semester. Actual salary will be commensurate with college level teaching experience.

UC Lecturers are academic appointees in an organized bargaining unit and are exclusively represented by American Federation of Teachers - Unit 18.

The number of positions varies from semester to semester, and appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance. Typically, the Department reviews applications for summer and fall teaching in April, and applications for spring teaching in October and November. Positions typically start at the beginning of the semester (in mid-January for Spring Semester; in mid-August for Fall Semester).
