Position description

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Korean Studies, tenure track, with an expected start date of July 1, 2021.

The department will consider applications from scholars working in Korean literature and culture (pre-modern and modern), but it is especially interested in expanding its research and teaching activities in the modern era (19th Century to the present). Scholars with training in comparative and interdisciplinary methodologies as well as an ability to work across cultural regions are encouraged to apply.

Candidates are expected to have advanced literacy and native or near-native spoken skills in Korean, the capacity to work with original texts, and research interests that deal centrally with Korean sources. Proficiency in one or more additional relevant research languages, facility with diverse source materials, and competence in cognate disciplines in the humanities, are preferred.

Basic Qualifications: Ph.D. or equivalent international degree or enrolled in a Ph.D. or equivalent international degree-granting program at the time of application. Additional Qualifications: Advanced literacy and proficiency in Korean by the start date. Preferred Qualifications: Ph.D. or equivalent international degree. Advanced literacy and proficiency in Korean, followed by similar skills in other East Asian languages; an ability to think and work across disciplines.

The successful candidate will be expected to sustain an active research and publications schedule, develop and teach graduate and undergraduate courses in Korean studies, supervise graduate students, and provide oversight of Korean language instruction. Candidates should have a record of excellence and innovation in research and teaching, and a demonstrated commitment to education and mentorship, service to the profession, and to diversity, equity and inclusion.
