Position description

The Graduate School of Education (GSE), University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a full-time Director (Coordinator of Public Programs V) of the Bay Area Writing Project.

The Bay Area Writing Project (BAWP), housed in the GSE and a member site of the National Writing Project (NWP) network, is a collaborative program between UC Berkeley and Bay Area teachers, schools, and districts. BAWP also maintains a comprehensive array of writing-focused youth programs throughout the Bay Area and abroad.

Since 1974, BAWP has been a vital resource for teachers and schools in the Bay Area, not only in the teaching of writing across the academic disciplines, but also as a model of professional development, teacher leadership, and educational reform. Firmly rooted in the belief that teachers are the best teachers of teachers, BAWP works to develop their capacity and expertise to lead professional development programs for Bay Area educators throughout the school year and each summer, serving hundreds of teachers and their students each year.

Major programs of BAWP include:

  • Professional development programs in Bay Area Schools (approximately 40 programs per year, serving 6-8 school districts)
  • Invitational Summer Institute (Summer, 3-4 weeks total)
  • Summer professional development courses open to all teachers
  • Academic year programs & yearly thematic conference focused on the teaching of writing
  • Teacher research and inquiry programs
  • Teachers as writers programs, community readings, and publications
  • Summer Young Writers & Teen Writing Courses
  • Collaborative programs with other non-profit organizations
  • Grant-funded initiatives

Director Responsibilities:

  1. Provide vision and oversight for the continuing development of all BAWP programs.
  2. Maintain the fiscal health of the project; oversee revenue and expense accounts, develop new and maintain existing funding sources such as school-based contracts, grants, and income-generating programs.
  3. Represent BAWP within the GSE in coordination with BAWP’s senate faculty project director including fostering collaborative BAWP/GSE projects, participating in designated GSE meetings, and submitting regular reports on fiscal viability, activities, and initiatives to the Dean and the senate faculty project director.
  4. Maintain and work to increase a high level of active participation within BAWP and the broader community.
  5. Recruit, train, and oversee BAWP staff; maintain oversight of hiring of BAWP teacher consultants (TCs).
  6. Prepare and submit annual funding proposals for state and federal funding.
  7. Submit quarterly & annual quantitative data reports on programs and teachers served by National and California Writing Projects.
  8. Foster relationships and develop collaborative projects with local education agencies, school districts and related non-profit agencies that further the collective goals of BAWP, the GSE and UC Berkeley.
  9. Identify and maintain a lead team to execute key day-to-day organizational functions and provide performance feedback to the director.
  10. Convene an advisory board at least once a year to contribute to organizational direction, support, and oversight.

The position’s responsibilities may shift depending on organizational needs and resources.

Basic Qualifications: Master’s or equivalent international degree by the time of application.

Additional Qualifications: At least five years of teaching experience in elementary, secondary, community college, or university. Minimum of three
years ’ experience in a leadership capacity within BAWP or another National Writing Project affiliated Writing Project.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience maintaining a high-functioning collaborative community of diverse individuals through a demonstrated capacity to maintain a clear vision and engaging others in the realization of that vision; demonstrated skills in program planning and capacity for administrative detail; experience managing organizational budgets; strong writing abilities for both academic and administrative purposes; demonstrated ability to write effective grant proposals and develop collaborative projects with schools and other organizations; understanding of teacher research and its implementation; strong knowledge of writing pedagogy and practice with demonstrated excellence as a teacher of writing; broad knowledge of teaching and learning in schools and communities with attention to issues of diversity, equity, and social justice; experience providing teacher professional development.

Salary: Salary is based on a 100% fiscal-year (eleven-month appointment). The director must generate sufficient funding through BAWP programming to support the fiscal year appointment salary. Initial appointment is for two years with subsequent reappointments year to year, contingent upon performance and resources. Salary will be commensurate with experience and salary history. Salary range encompasses the Coordinator of Public Programs IV-VI ($71,000-$102,100).
