Description
The University and Jepson Herbaria at the University of California, Berkeley, established in 1895 holds botanical collections from around the world. It is home to research laboratories, libraries, and archives. We are seeking applications for the Tucker Curator of Lichenology [at the Assistant Specialist level]. The position is full-time with an expected start date of January 2020.

Responsibilities
The successful candidate will conduct research on the systematics of lichens, lichenicoles, and/or allied fungi in California and beyond, will participate in outreach and educational activities involving lichens, and be responsible for the continued growth and curation of the lichen collection at the University and Jepson Herbaria. The position is funded by an endowment established by Dr. Shirley Tucker, a distinguished scholar whose accomplishments in lichenology, as well as other areas of botany, have been widely recognized.

We seek candidates who have a demonstrated excellence, originality, and productivity in research, along with interest in herbarium collections and public outreach.

The Tucker Curator of Lichenology will work under the guidance and supervision of the Director of the University and Jepson Herbaria. This position will be based at the Herbaria on the Berkeley campus.

Basic/Minimum Qualifications [required at time of application]

  • Master’s degree [or equivalent international degree] OR enrolled in a Master's degree [or equivalent international degree] program

Additional Qualifications [required by date of hire]

  • Master’s degree [or equivalent international degree]
  • Five years’ of research experience
  • Minimum of two years of research experience with lichens

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a research environment
  • Strong verbal communication skills and an ability to communicate with people of different backgrounds
  • Experience with working collaboratively

Appointment
The position reports to Brent Mishler. The position will be full-time for two years with the possibility of extension based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
