We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise and teaching experience in K-12, U.S. translingual contexts and a research focus on one or more of the following areas: language and literacy learning and development of translingual youth, emergent bilingual/biliteracy assessment, the intersection of language/literacy, culture, learning, and equity in the teaching and learning of emergent bilinguals, teacher learning in translingual contexts, the effects of language policies in the education of emergent bilinguals, critical inquiry in language and literacy studies, and new approaches that advance dynamic and nuanced conceptions of language.

The successful candidate should be prepared to teach and advise doctoral students specializing in Language and Literacy studies within one of the GSE programmatic clusters: Learning Sciences and Human Development; Social Research Methodologies; Critical Studies of Race, Class, and Gender; or Policy, Politics, and Leadership. The successful candidate will contribute to either the GSE’s innovative M.A. or Ed.D. programs in educational leadership or to its teacher education programs (Berkeley Educators for Equity and Excellence or BE3). Diversity, equity, and inclusion are core values at UC Berkeley and the Graduate School of Education. Our excellence can only be fully realized by faculty, students, and staff who share our commitment to these values. Successful candidates for our faculty positions will demonstrate evidence of a commitment to advancing equity and inclusion.

Basic qualifications: Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) granting program and completion of all requirements except the dissertation at the time of application.

Experience teaching about language and literacy with a focus on translingual contexts and populations; teaching experience in K-12 U.S. educational settings, translingual contexts preferred; and experience working with and teaching diverse students at the undergraduate and graduate level.

An applicant’s evidence of excellence can be demonstrated in the forms of published or in press manuscripts in leading peer reviewed journals; exemplary chapters in edited books; outstanding letters from experts in the field; an exemplary research program to be accomplished in the next 5 years; and conference presentations or other forms of professional contributions indicative of strong participation in the research community.
