Position description

Postdoctoral Scholar – Metabolic, Cancer, and Stem Cell Biology Department of Nutritional Sciences & Toxicology

There are openings for up to 3 postdoctoral positions available in the lab of Dr. Andreas Stahl at UC Berkeley. The aims of the positions will be tailored to the expertise of the successful applicant and complement the Stahl Lab's broad interests in the engineering of metabolic fluxes.

The following areas are sought:

Metabolic Biology
Activating brown adipose tissue holds the promise of burning excess calories and thus might lead to new strategies for fighting obesity-related disorders. As outlined in our recent Cell Metabolism paper (PMID:29514068), we have uncovered evidence for a new mechanism of brown adipose tissue activation that involves the creation and sensing of intracellular tension, which we want to characterize further by identifying its molecular components.

Cancer Cell Biology
Current NIH funded work is focused on elucidating the role of protein mediated fatty acid uptake in the growth of cholangiocarcinomas using in vivo models.

Stem Cell Biology
As part of a multidisciplinary team we are working on novel approaches to expedite the search for obesity and diabetes treatments by developing new microfluidic devices that combine human stem-cell derived tissues with each other to simulate normal and diseased hormonal and metabolic interactions.

All postdocs will work closely with the PI, collaborators, and our dynamic lab crew to design and lead research. The position also involves preparing grant proposals and manuscripts, data management and dissemination, and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students. The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to integrate across biological disciplines, identify and troubleshoot promising new methodologies independently, and use the appointment to develop and pursue novel, exciting questions.

Basic Qualifications
Advanced degree or enrolled in advanced degree program at the time of application.

Additional Qualifications
PhD (or equivalent international degree) required by the appointment start date. The candidate may have no more than four years of post-degree research experience by start date.

Preferred Qualifications
• Demonstrated expertise in cell biology and/or bioengineering
• Demonstrated expertise in oncology, genetics, and cancer cell metabolism or metabolomics.
• Demonstrated expertise in human stem cell biology
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team
• Demonstrated ability to produce scientific results and to publish papers in international peer- reviewed journals

Appointment:
The targeted start date for this position is Late Fall 2018 – Spring 2019. The initial appointment is for one year, with renewal based on performance and funding availability. This is a full time appointment.

Salary and Benefits
The annual salary range for this position is $49,188 - $57,528. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Generous benefits are included https://vspa.berkeley.edu/postdocs
