Position description

The Department of Integrative Biology (IB) at UC Berkeley invites applications for a pool of part-time or full-time, temporary, non-tenure track Lecturer positions to teach IB courses as need arises. This pool will remain open until October 11, 2019 to accommodate upcoming course needs and new applicants. Appointments for Fall semesters are usually reviewed in April, Spring semester appointments are reviewed in September, and Summer appointments are reviewed in January. If you wish to remain in the pool after October 11, 2019, you will need to reapply. Positions typically start at the beginning of the semester, and appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance. Positions may range from 15% to 100% depending on the number of courses taught and duties performed.

Teaching Responsibilities
We are seeking outstanding lecturers who can teach/co-teach small, medium, and large size seminar and/or laboratory courses in the broad subject areas listed below:
• Ecology
• Evolution
• Organismal Biology
• Integrative Human Biology

General Duties
In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, creating and grading quizzes and/or exams, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), and using a learning management system (e.g., bCourses at UC Berkeley, Blackboard, Canvas, etc.).

Minimum Basic Qualifications (by time of application): Advanced degree or enrolled in an advanced degree program at the time of application.

Additional Qualifications (by start date): A Ph.D. or equivalent international degree in the biological sciences is required by the start date of the job. Experience teaching a college level course (previously employed as a graduate student instructor, teaching assistant, lecturer, etc.) of the biological sciences is also required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with a web-based learning management system for grading and classroom management is preferred.

Salary
Minimum starting annual full-time salary rate is $54,738. Salary to be commensurate with experience and education. Some credit will be given to prior college-level teaching experience (not including graduate student or summer sessions teaching).

One miscellaneous teaching document is optional. Please include career highlights in the cover letter that specifically address the subject matter of our courses. The CV should include teaching experience with a listing of dates, courses, units, and title (Lecturer, Graduate Student Instructor/Teaching Assistant, Guest Lecturer, etc.). Statement of Teaching Philosophy should be no more than three pages. Student evaluations of teaching should include all respondents (quantitative and qualitative). For those with considerable teaching experience, complete student evaluations of teaching from the last three courses taught will suffice. Letters of recommendation may be requested of finalists. If reference letters are later solicited by the Department, they will be treated as confidential per University of California policy and California state law.
