Position description

The Theoretical Astrophysics Center (TAC) at the University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for the TAC Assistant Project Scientists, starting in the summer or fall of 2019. These are full time positions. Under supervision of senior faculty, the Project Scientists are expected to carry out independent research on topics of their choosing in theoretical astrophysics, cosmology or planetary science. Applicants are expected to have demonstrated clear research leadership in their field with a demonstrated track record of leading publications and talks at international conferences. In addition to being considered for positions at Berkeley, applicants will also be considered for positions in stellar and time-domain astrophysics joint between Berkeley, Caltech, and KITP and for positions in plasma astrophysics joint between Princeton and Berkeley.

Current senior members of the TAC include Jonathan Arons, Eugene Chiang, Joanne Cohn, Marc Davis, Al Glassgold, Wick Haxton, Daniel Kasen, Richard Klein, Chung-Pei Ma, Philip Marcus, Christopher McKee, Burkhard Militzer, Eliot Quataert, Uros Seljak, and Martin White. Successful candidates will also have the opportunity to interact with the broad spectrum of researchers in the Berkeley Astronomy Department and with other experimental and theoretical programs in the neighboring Physics Department, Space Sciences Laboratory, and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Basic qualifications: At Assistant Project Scientist level, applicants should have a PhD or equivalent foreign degree with two or more years of postdoctoral research experience at the time of application.

Additional qualifications (Required by start date):

At Assistant Project Scientist level, applicants should have more than 3 years of postdoctoral research experience by the start date, summer or fall of 2019 at UC Berkeley.

Preferred qualifications: A PhD in any of the following fields: theoretical astrophysics, cosmology, planetary science, exoplanets, plasma physics, star and/or galaxy formation, compact objects, stars and supernovae. Previous theoretical research, degree and/or specialization is required, including a track record of published lead-author papers. Applicants are expected to have demonstrated clear research leadership in their field with a strong track record of leading publications and talks at international conferences.
