Position description

The Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a full-time faculty position at the Assistant Professor level (tenure track), in the area of Balkan/South Slavic Studies. The expected start date is July 1, 2019.

The department seeks a specialist in South Slavic Languages/Literatures/Cultures whose primary focus is Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian (BCS). This may include specializations in literature, folklore, linguistics, and/or the cultural history of the region. Candidates will be expected to supervise BCS language instruction and should be able to teach BCS at the advanced level. Expertise in additional Slavic languages is welcomed. Required minimum qualification at the time of application:

  • Completion of all PhD (or equivalent international degree) requirements except the dissertation.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Native or near-native competence in Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian and in English.
  • Completion of the Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree) strongly preferred by the start date of the position.
  • Demonstrated research, teaching, and administrative abilities.

Candidates selected for these interviews will be notified as soon as possible in advance of the convention. While in-person interviews are preferred, candidates will not be disqualified for not attending the conference.
