The Department of Chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Assistant, Associate, or Full Project Scientist, at 50% time with an expected start date of October 1, 2018.

About the UC Berkeley, Department of Chemistry – Long Group:

Research in the Long group focuses on the design and controlled synthesis of novel inorganic materials and molecules toward the fundamental understanding of new physical phenomena, with applications in gas storage, molecular separations, conductivity, catalysis, and magnetism. We employ a range of physical methods to analyze and characterize our materials comprehensively, including by gas adsorption analysis, X-ray and neutron diffraction, various spectroscopic techniques, and SQUID magnetometry. Position Description:

Working closely with Professor Jeffrey Long, the primary responsibilities of this position will be to make significant contributions in the training and development of group members as scientific writers, in the preparation and composition of scientific manuscripts, grant proposals, presentations, and general dissemination of science conducted in the Long Group. Specifically, the Project Scientist will work on the following:

• Work closely with group members to train them in excellent scientific writing and presentation of their work and assist in the preparation and presentation of research findings.
• Work closely with PhD students as necessary to assist in preparation for advancement-to-candidacy requirements, not limited to drafting and completing research proposals and presentations.
• Work to maintain active knowledge and familiarity with research ongoing in the Long Group and relevant literature to best advise group members as described above.
• Coordinate and supervise composition and publication of Long Group research, in scientific journals and meetings.
• Coordinate preparation of proposals to funding agencies, including assisting with seeking new funding opportunities as needed.
• Coordinate the dissemination of collaborative research with various groups at UC Berkeley and with external research groups, including manuscript preparation and formal reporting to various funding agencies as needed.
• Update the description of group research as needed, both on the Long group webpage and other relevant University-wide or external forums for outreach.

Basic Qualifications:

Advanced degree or enrolled in advanced degree program at time of application.

Additional Qualifications:

PhD or equivalent international degree by the start of the appointment.

Preferred Qualifications:

• PhD or equivalent degree in Chemistry or related field.
• 3+ years of directly relevant experience after completion of PhD in technical and academic writing and editing.
• Strong background in synthetic chemistry and ability to quickly familiarize with new areas of research.
• Strong ability to translate scientific results into a coherent and excellent framework for optimal dissemination, both to experts and non-experts.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including strong scientific writing and publishing experience.
• A self-starter with proven ability to work independently with minimal oversight.
• Ability to meet the outlined responsibilities on a deadline-driven schedule.
• Experience in scientific writing and editing such as composition of research manuscripts according to requirements of various publishers.
• Strong publication and/or editorial record.
• Familiarity with processes for seeking out funding opportunities.
• Broad background in materials chemistry, including but not limited to the synthesis and characterization of molecules and extended solids for applications in areas such as molecular separations and magnetism.

The salary range for this part-time (50%) position is $57,400 - $105,600 per year plus benefits.
