Position description

The UC Berkeley Lishko Laboratory is seeking to hire a specialist to assist with ongoing research on the role of mitochondria in male fertility. The goals of the Lishko lab are to understand the molecular mechanisms underlying the physiology of mammalian fertilization. The lab studies the function of sperm ion channels, macromolecules essential for proper ion homeostasis. By understanding the physiology of sperm cells the Lishko lab aims to develop safe contraceptives and diagnostic tests for male fertility.

MINIMUM/BASIC QUALIFICATIONS (AT TIME OF APPLICATION):
Advanced degree, or equivalent international degree, or enrolled in an advanced degree program or equivalent international degree program, at the time of application.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS (BY START DATE):
• Completed advanced degree, or equivalent international degree.
• Experience working with bacterial and mammalian cell culture, yeast, C.elegans. Cell transfection, bacterial transformation, immunohistochemistry, DNA and RNA isolation and processing, plasmid isolation, PCR, RT- PCR, qPCR, sequence alignment, RNAi assays.
• Knowledge and experience in working in BSL-2 type laboratories.
• Experience working with human cell/tissue and biopsies.
• Prior experience working in scientific or clinical laboratories (more than 1 year)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (BY START DATE):
Strong writing skills; writing and submitting applications, grant proposal editing skills, scientific writing skills.

APPOINTMENT
This position reports to Dr. Polina Lishko. The initial appointment will be full-time at 100% time for up to one (1) year with the possibility of extension based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding. The approximate start date of this position will be July 2018. Research in this lab is focused on the cell biology of mammalian fertilization. The lab uses biophysical, biochemical and molecular genetics methods to study sperm ion channels and transporters that regulate processes of sperm motility, chemotaxis and acrosome reaction. A better understanding of these key sperm ion transport proteins will eventually lead to the development of effective tools to control and preserve male fertility.

SALARY AND BENEFITS
[$49,700– $67,900] at 100% time, depending on qualifications. This position provides full benefits. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and based on UC Berkeley specialist series salary scale.
