Position description

Assistant Project Scientist:
The goal of our research is to understand the molecular machinery that allows neurons to both be dynamic and maintain balanced activity levels. Perturbations in synapse and circuit activity are associated with numerous neurological and psychiatric disorders, including autism spectrum disorder. Our work strives to understand how mutations in autism risk genes lead to altered neuronal, synaptic, and circuit activity. To address this, we take a multi-systems approach incorporating molecular, biochemical, electrophysiological, and behavioral analyses in mouse models and patient-derived human cells.

Responsibilities:
This position is for a post-doctoral scientist who will work on a project investigating how mutations in autism risk genes affect the function of striatal and dopamine neurons.
Responsibilities will include maintaining a transgenic mouse colony, carrying out slice electrophysiology experiments, running mouse behavior tests, and performing in vivo fiber photometry experiments. This person will also help train undergraduate and graduate students and supervise a research technician.

Minimum/Basic Qualifications Required (By the time of application):
Candidates must have Ph.D. or equivalent degree program in ecology, evolution or a related field

Additional Required Qualifications (By start date):
3 – 5 years postdoctoral research experience in Neurosciences, Molecular/Cell Biology, Neurobiology or a related field.

Hands-on experience and demonstrable expertise in genetic mouse models, slice electrophysiology, mouse behavior, intracranial injections, optogenetics, and in vivo fiber photometry.

Preferred Qualifications (By start date):
Strong publications record in the area of Neurobiology. Understanding of the basal ganglia and dopaminergic circuits preferred.

Appointment:
This position reports to Dr. Helen Bateup. The initial appointment will be for 100% time for 1 year with the possibility of extension based on performance availability of funds. The approximate start date for this position will be October 2018.

Salary: $55,700 - $61,800 annually depending on qualifications. This position provides full benefits.
