Position description

Dr. Vincent Resh in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy, & Management at the University of California, Berkeley (UCB) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar position starting Summer or Fall 2018. The candidate will work with Dr. Vincent Resh and colleagues on a new collaborative research project between UCB and the University of the Philippines (UPD) Marine Science Institute to better measure and model marine water quality and environmental health issues. The research will center on the use of an autonomous surface vehicle (ASV) to collect a wide range of spatially referenced data (meteorological, oceanographic, acoustic, photographic, and multiple water- quality parameters) which will be complemented with water samples and lab-based analyses as well as satellite and other remote sensed data. Research and data collection activities will center on three sites: two coastal sites where natural and anthropogenic runoff, effluent, and other factors (including submarine groundwater discharges at one site) are suspected to be associated with nutrient fluxes, harmful algal blooms, and other water quality and environmental health impacts; and one open-ocean site in a marine protected area where fishing and other activities and impacts on marine biodiversity (fish and coral systems) will be investigated.

Project Activities and Expectations
Following initial training on the use of the ASV (deployment, monitoring, maintenance, and data retrieval), the Postdoctoral Scholar will collaborate with UCB and UPD colleagues to:
• Install, configure, and test a variety of sensors for the ASV
• Combine ASV data with satellite and other remote sensed data to produce high-resolution maps (to better understand spatial and temporal impacts of nutrient fluxes and HABs)
• Measure and model the flows and spatial extent of wastewater effluent discharges in coastal/recreational areas (using data from fluorescence-based in situ monitoring and lab-based analysis of water samples)
• Measure and map the flows and impacts of submarine groundwater discharges on coastal water quality (including seasonal analyses)
• Use USV and acoustic data to monitor marine mammal populations and fishing activities
• Prepare multiple articles for submission to high-impact peer-reviewed journals

Basic Qualifications (by the time of application)
Candidates must have completed all degree requirements except the dissertation or be enrolled in an accredited PhD, MD or equivalent degree program in Environmental Science, Geography, Marine Science, Computer Science, Statistics or related field.

Additional Qualifications (by start date)
Candidates must have PhD, MD or equivalent degree in Environmental Science, Geography, Marine Science, Computer Science, Statistics or related field. Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Preferred Qualifications (by start date)
• Demonstrated expertise in GIS, remote sensing, statistics, and spatial modeling
• Demonstrated ability to produce high quality scientific results with limited direct guidance
• Demonstrated experience with hardware and software configuration and programming
• Demonstrated experience with remotely operated vehicles
• Knowledge in marine systems science or environmental science
Appointment
The targeted start date for this position is Fall 2018 or Spring 2019. The initial appointment is for one year, with renewal based on funding and performance. This is a full-time appointment.

Salary and Benefits
The annual salary range for this position is $48,216 - $56,400. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Funding for travel to, and field work in, the Philippines will be provided.
Generous benefits are included http://ucnet.universityofcalifornia.edu/compensation-and-benefits/health- plans/index.html.
