Position description

The College of Letters & Science at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach Letters & Science (L&S) W1 - Exploring the Liberal Arts, should an opening arise, in the summer. Screening of applicants is ongoing and will continue as needed. The number of positions varies from summer to summer, depending on the needs of the department. Positions generally begin at 11%.

L&S W1 aims to orient newly admitted UC Berkeley freshman, international and visiting students, and high school students to the intellectual landscape of the College of Letters & Science in an unusual course format where lectures and discussion sections are online. Guest speakers (deans, alumni, staff) and faculty reveal the underlying assumptions, goals, and structure of a liberal arts education by focusing on different disciplinary or interdisciplinary areas of the college. By expanding their horizons, students will explore and gain insights about the 80+ various majors offered and career possibilities, ultimately becoming informed and active participants of their own educational experience at UC Berkeley.

Responsibilities include leading discussion section(s), scoring essays, assigning grades, holding office hours, overseeing and guide graduate student instructors (GSIs), monitoring discussion forums, scheduling special guests for “live” online sessions, and ensuring grading consistency and equity across the different discussion sections.

Basic Qualifications (by the time of application): The minimum qualifications required to be an applicant are the completion of all PhD or equivalent degree requirements, except the dissertation, in a relevant liberal arts field.

Additional Qualifications (by start date): A PhD or equivalent degree in liberal arts education is required by the start date.

Preferred Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have demonstrated commitment to the liberal arts, experience managing multiple GSIs, and a history of positive teaching evaluations.

Salary: to be commensurate with experience, starting at the full time salary rate of $53,402.
