Position description

The California Institute for Energy and Environment (CIEE) at the University of California, Berkeley, invites applications for an Assistant Professional Researcher in the area of modeling sustainable energy systems and transportation for Mexico. The successful candidate will also have managerial responsibilities. The incumbent will research and develop big data models for incorporating renewable energy to the grid, assessing key transportation infrastructure elements, including planning the approach, carrying out computer simulations of models, and assessing results. The incumbent will also be responsible for coordination of several related projects with US and Mexican government agencies and with academic stakeholders from the US and Mexico.

Duties of the successful candidate will include:

• Engage in independent and collaborative research with both UC Berkeley researchers and those at other institutions in Mexico.
• Publish research in academic journals and at conferences;
• Engage in collaborative research relationships with government and academic stakeholders;
• Attend and actively support scientific seminars in Mexico and UC Berkeley;
• Supervise and train Masters and PhD students;
• Supervise postdoctoral researchers;
• Increase engagement activities with current partners;
• Pursue additional funding opportunities consistent with existing and future research programs and goals.

Basic Qualifications (required at the time of application):
• Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Energy Engineering, or a closely related engineering field.

Additional Required Qualifications (required by start date):
• At least two years of postdoctoral experience in the general area of capacity expansion models.
• Demonstrated experience with use of big data in computational models and proved merit by awards or publications.
• Demonstrated experience managing research projects and supervising graduate and undergraduate students.

Preferred Qualifications:
Preference will be given to those with demonstrated experience with any of the following:
• Programming experience (e.g., Python, C++, Java, R, etc.).
• Two or more years of experience working with academic institutions in Mexico in the energy field.
• Experience with use of big data applied to energy systems in Mexico.
• Demonstrated publication record in peer-reviewed journals in the field of energy and technologies.
• Proven ability to lead independent research and mentor students and other research personnel.
• Experience in collaborating with both government and academic stakeholders in Mexico.
• Experience in the public sector in Mexico (preferably directly in the Energy sector).
• Knowledge of the research contracting practices of Mexican government agencies.
• Fluency in Spanish

The anticipated start date is July 1st, 2018. This position is full-time (100%) with a salary commensurate with experience and qualifications, and carries full benefits. The initial appointment will be for two years, with a possibility of renewal. Extension of the appointment is subject to performance and availability of funds.
