The Program in Jewish Studies at UC Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified, part-time, non-tenure track temporary lecturers to teach undergraduate courses on topics related to Jewish history, literature, language, society, culture, and the arts.
The number of positions hired from this pool will vary from semester to semester, subject to the needs and budget of the Program. Positions will most likely be part time, but may range from 33% to 100% of full time employment, depending on the number of classes being taught.
Applications will be accepted and reviewed if/when needed through April 1, 2019. The department typically reviews applications for fall courses in March, April or May; for spring courses in October/November, and for summer courses in February/March.
Positions typically start at the beginning of the semester and appointments may be renewable based on the Program’s need, funding, and on lecturer performance.
General Duties: In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus, reading reserves, course website), and interacting with students outside of class time via email and/or bCourses.
Minimum Basic Qualifications (required at time of application):
• Completion of all Ph.D. requirements (or equivalent) except dissertation in Jewish Studies or a related field by the time of application.
Additional Qualifications (required by the employment start date):
• Fluency in the English language.
• PhD (or equivalent degree) in Jewish Studies or related field.
• Applicants must be able to legally work in the United States. The Center is unable to arrange visas/work permits for Lecturer positions.
• Experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college level in the U.S.
• Demonstrated knowledge relevant to courses to be taught; evidence of original research (academic papers or publications) relevant to the subject matter preferred.
• Potential for successful attraction, advising and mentoring students.
• If hired to teach R&C, demonstrated experience teaching reading and writing in English and familiarity with UC Berkeley Reading & Composition requirements.

Salary: Commensurate with college teaching experience, in accordance with the current
Unit-18 lecturer salary scale and its provisions. (The starting 100% full-time annual gross salary rate is currently $53,402. Lecturers teaching one course per semester are typically appointed at a 33% rate.)
