The University of California, Berkeley, is seeking a Digital Project Archivist to digitally process archival collections related to the Japanese American War Relocation and Confinement that have been identified as priorities for online access. This is a temporary, two-year appointment. The successful candidate will have experience in digital collection processing, demonstrated understanding of archival description and materials, familiarity with digital project management and web and new media strategies, familiarity with library standards (EAD, METS, MARC, MODS), and strong communications skills.

The Bancroft Library of the University of California, Berkeley, is one of the largest and most heavily used libraries of rare materials in the West. Its holdings include more than 600,000 volumes, 70 million manuscripts, 9 million photographs and other pictorial materials, 86,000 microforms, 4.3 million digital files, and 25,000 maps, as well as numerous other categories of unique material. The two largest collections are the Bancroft Collection of Western and Latin Americana and the Rare Books Collection. The archival and rare book materials of the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life are also part of the Bancroft holdings. Bancroft is home to three research groups: the Oral History Center (formerly the Regional Oral History Office); the Mark Twain Papers; and the Center for the Tebtunis Papyri. The Bancroft Library is an active center of teaching and research. The Digital Project Archivist will be responsible for digitally processing archival collections, tracking and routing materials, linking the resulting digital collections to existing finding aid descriptions, enhancing descriptions, ensuring the encoding of the finding aids and digital objects for delivery to the Online Archive of California and the UC3 preservation service, and overseeing creation of a thematic website related to Japanese American Confinement Sites. The Digital Project Archivist will report to the Assistant Director and work closely with the Digital Collections Archivist, and will supervise student library employees as needed. The Digital Project Archivist will work with the Assistant Director to fulfill reporting requirements to the granting agency, will work in consultation with curators in the digital processing of the collections, and will work with a Web Designer to develop a thematic website. The Digital Project Archivist will also work with the Principal Cataloger to update collection records in the bibliographic catalog.
UC Berkeley librarians are expected to participate in library-wide planning and governance, to work effectively in a shared decision-making environment and to be active professionally. Professional contributions beyond the primary responsibilities are required for advancement in the Librarian series. The successful candidate will show promise or evidence of such contributions.
Minimum Basic Qualification(s) at time of application:
• Master’s degree from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program or equivalent degree with a specialization in archival studies or special collections.
Additional Required Qualifications by start date in position:
• Experience in digital collections processing or digital curation.
• Familiarity with archival collections and principles of arrangement and description.
• Familiarity with project management.
• Demonstrated analytical, documentation and written/verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated written and oral communications skills
Additional Preferred Qualifications:
• Familiarity with Encoded Archival Description (EAD), Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard (METS), Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC), and Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS).
• Knowledge of or experience with ArchivesSpace and content management systems.
• Previous experience digitally processing archives or otherwise working in a special collections environment
