ASSISTANT SPECIALIST, Step I to III – Insect Parasitoid Biology and Ecology Department of Environmental Science, Policy & Management

The Daane Laboratory in the Department of Environmental Science, Policy & Management at the University of California, Berkeley is looking for a highly motivated Assistant Specialist. The incumbent will perform quarantine studies on imported natural enemies of invasive insects that damage California crops or landscape plants. The experiments will include non-target host assessment, parasitoid efficacy, parasitoid temperature development and host stage preference, and parasitoid response to volatile cues and other host-searching behaviors.

Design experiments, conduct research, analyze results and present and publish the finding of studies on the natural enemies of the spotted wing drosophila and the olive psyllid. The work will primarily be conducted in the UCB Quarantine location at the Oxford Tract.

Basic Qualifications:
Candidate must have a Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent degree in an Entomology or Pest Management field, or related field by the time of application.

Additional Required Qualifications:
Candidate must have 1-3 years of experience in parasitoid biology, taxonomy of natural enemies, quarantine procedures, and statistical methodology by appointment start date.

Preferred Qualifications:
Demonstrated experience in quarantine studies with insect parasitoids to determine their suitability for release from quarantine and possible field release into North America by appointment start date.

This position will report to Cooperative Extension Specialist (faculty) Kent Daane. This six-month (6) appointment will be full-time with an approximate start date in late Fall 2017.

Salary: Commensurate with experience and qualifications. This position provides Mid-Level Benefits.
