ASSISTANT OR ASSOCIATE ADJUNCT PROFESSOR OF EPIDEMIOLOGY/BIOSTATISTICS
The School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley, is seeking up to two new members of the Epidemiology/Biostatistics faculty. Candidates with PhD level training in quantitative disciplines (e.g., Biostatistics, Statistics, Epidemiology, Economics, and other quantitative fields with strong statistical component) will be considered and must possess training and experience in teaching, mentoring and research collaboration in applied statistics, and/or biostatistics. The School of Public Health seeks candidates whose research, teaching, or service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and inclusion in higher education. This is a partially hard-monied position, with up to 50% of the academic year salary provided by the School for the teaching requirements of these positions. There is an expectation of supplemental grant supported research, for the remaining portion of the full time position. This is a 9 month position, with academic salary and the associated benefits paid over 12 months, and opportunities for additional teaching or research during the summer to complete up to full year of effort. The teaching load will be about three courses per academic year, with additional responsibilities for mentoring and academic coordination related to non- Biostatistics graduate students in other programs (largely MPH students). There is also the opportunity for summer session teaching and teaching in the self-supporting online MPH program (OOMPH). The anticipated start date is July 1, 2018.
The Berkeley campus is home to outstanding academic programs and faculty in almost every conceivable field. In particular, the Division of Biostatistics and the Department of Statistics offer an extraordinary array of courses and research opportunities in both theoretical and applied statistics. As shown in detail on our faculty websites (http://www.stat.berkeley.edu/biostat/faculty), current activities in our group focus broadly on the development of high-dimensional, data-adaptive methods to address statistical issues in clinical and intervention trials, observational epidemiology (e.g., cancer, infectious disease), high dimensional biology (e.g., high-throughput sequencing and microarray gene expression data analysis), imaging, applications in Big Data, and studies of global health and justice. These positions are primarily responsible for teaching biostatistics to non-biostatistics students in public health, including students within the MPH program. The position will involve participation in the online MPH program (OOMPH), including the possible development and teaching of new courses. Additional responsibilities will be in the area of collaborative research and we expect the faculty member to establish/maintain a part-time research program, potentially linked to the focus areas of the Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics.
Basic qualifications (At the time of application):
The completion of all degree requirements except the dissertation in Biostatistics, Statistics, Epidemiology, Economics or a related quantitative field.
Additional qualifications (At the time of start date):
Completed PhD or equivalent degree in Biostatistics, Statistics, Epidemiology, Economics or a related quantitative field.
• Training and experience in teaching applied statistics, and/or biostatistics, especially in large courses to non- statistically trained audiences.
• Demonstrated potential and/or experience in developing collaborations involving contemporary public health and/or biomedical problems
• Demonstrated experience working with and mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in use of statistics in their class work and research.
