Position description

The University of California, Berkeley, School of Law, invites applications from entry-level and lateral candidates for full-time, tenured and tenure-track faculty positions with an expected start date of July 1, 2018. We welcome applications from candidates across all areas of law, although subject areas of particular interest include business law; civil procedure; comparative and international law; contracts; criminal law and criminal procedure; evidence; property; tax; and torts. Berkeley Law is interested in candidates who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence by providing leadership in teaching, research and service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. Candidates must either: a) hold a J.D. or equivalent degree by date of application, or b) hold or have advanced to candidacy status for a Ph.D., or equivalent degree, in a related field by date of application. Doctoral (or equivalent degree) candidates will be expected to complete their degree within six months of appointment.

Berkeley Law offers a unique program of graduate study in law and society, leading to the Ph.D. degree in Jurisprudence and Social Policy (JSP). More information about the JSP Program can be found
at: https://www.law.berkeley.edu/academics/doctoral-programs/jsp/. Candidates interested in teaching as a faculty member within the JSP Program should have an interest in the teaching and mentoring of Ph.D. students admitted to the JSP Program in the School of Law. Given the multi-disciplinary character of the JSP Program, JSP faculty members are expected to help support students across a range of academic approaches, as well as within their own area of disciplinary training. We welcome expressions of interest in the JSP Program from candidates in any subject area.

All entry-level candidates, including those who have registered with the Association of American Law Schools (AALS) Faculty Appointments Register (FAR), must complete an online application with Berkeley Law via the following link: https://aprecruit.berkeley.edu/apply/JPF01441. Applications must include in pdf format: a CV; a research agenda; a list of teaching preferences grouped by preferred subjects and secondary subjects; and entry of three (3) references, including names and contact information. Candidates interested in teaching as faculty in the JSP program must select “JSP” in the specializations field. Entry-level candidates are strongly encouraged to apply before
September 26, 2017.

The Initial Review Date for entry-level applications will be September 6, 2017. Application submissions will be accepted through December 4, 2017.

Lateral candidates who already hold tenured or tenure-track positions at other institutions are encouraged to apply online for consideration via the following link: https://aprecruit.berkeley.edu/apply/JPF01442. As evidence of scholarly achievement and teaching potential, applicants must submit a CV and enter the names and contact information for three (3) references. Candidates interested in teaching as faculty in the JSP program must select “JSP” in the specializations field.
