Position description

The Project Scientist will participate in the RISER project, which is an NSF-Funded collaboration between UC-Berkeley, the USGS, UC-Davis and NYU. The project integrates hydrodynamics, climate science, transportation engineering, economic optimization and governance analysis to examine how sea level rise affects a region (San Francisco Bay Area) and the decision-making structures that exist to address it. This position will contribute to the broader, multi-discplinary team by building the project's core strength in hydrodynamic modeling.

Appointment Length:
This is a full time one-year position. Anticipated start date is September 1, 2017.

Responsibilities
The Project Scientist will engage with the interdisiplinary RISER team to simulate future flooding under scenarios of sea level rise. Most directly, the candidate will work with the USGS (in their Santa Cruz office) to extend the CoSMoS modeling framework to address specific needs of the RISER project, including the application of D-Flow FM to simulation of lower watershed flooding in tributaries to San Francisco Bay. The Project Scientist will also coordinate USGS and UC- Berkeley modeling efforts to ensure a common framework. Reporting will be through participation in project meetings and presentations to both working groups and scientific conferences.

Basic Qualifications:
At time of application
• PhD or equivalent degree in Civil/Environmental Engineering, Physical Oceanography, or related field

Additional Qualifications:
By start date
• Experience with estuarine modeling
• A minimum of three years of post-PhD research experience

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with Deltares modeling tools

Salary:
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and based on UC Berkeley salary scales. A starting salary of $72,700 (step 1) is anticipated.
