Position description

The Department of Art Practice at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for a pool of part-time lecturers to teach courses in ceramics, drawing, photography, painting, sculpture, video, Art 8, a cross-media foundations course, and seminars in contemporary global art, arts writing, and museum studies. Some of these courses are offered in summer sessions only. Please indicate your availability and preference for Summer or Fall 2018. Duties include teaching a studio and/or lecture course (or courses), advising students, and holding regular office hours. A Lecturer helps students build conceptual and critical foundations, and practical studio skills that may focus on materials, form, content, history, and process. In summer session, each course meets for a total of 12 hours per week (usually 3 hours x 4 days a week) for 6 weeks. Academic Year courses are either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday and each course meets for 6 hours of lecture per week (3 hours x 2 days a week) plus 3 hours of students’ independent studio time per week.

Basic qualifications: Must have received a BA or equivalent degree by time of application.

Additional qualifications by start date: MFA or equivalent degree, and teaching experience.

Preferred qualifications by start date: Outstanding oral and written communication skills, excellent interpersonal skills.

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience. Approximate starting salary of $5,874 (part-time 11% position for Summer Session). Approximate starting salary of $53,402 annually for the academic year. Some credit may be given to prior college-level teaching experience.

This is a non-tenured, temporary position: the appointments to the title of Lecturer are self- terminating (no further notice on non-reappointment will be forthcoming) and do not create an obligation on the part of the University either to extend or renew the appointment outlined above.
