Research Data Management Program Manager – Library
Library Position: Academic Administrator IV
Salary: $72,624-$99,672, per annum, based upon qualifications
This is a full-time appointment available starting May 2017

UC Berkeley is looking for a service-oriented Research Data Management (RDM) Program Manager whose principal role will be to ensure the effective design and coordination of RDM issues and services. The RDM Program Manager will be the lead position responsible for administering the RDM program and services for the campus. S/he will be a campus resource on local, national and international RDM developments, overseeing the program and its services to academic departments and service units. The RDM Program Manager will work closely with and lead a multi-departmental team and will be responsible for providing leadership and collaborative coordination to ensure the success of this university-wide program.

The Environment
The UC Berkeley Library is an internationally renowned research and teaching facility at one of the nation's premier public universities. In a highly diverse and intellectually rich environment, Berkeley serves a campus community of 25,500 undergraduate students, 10,300 graduate students, and a faculty of 1,500. This position works primarily with campus IT (Research IT) and the University Library. Research IT is a unit within Information Services and Technology (IST) with a operational focus on research technology. The Library comprises 20 campus libraries - including the Doe/Moffitt Libraries, the Bancroft Library, the C. V. Starr East Asian Library and subject specialty libraries. With a collection of more than 11 million volumes and a collection budget of over $15 million, the Library offers extensive collections in all formats and robust services to connect users with those collections and build their related research skills.

Co-reporting to the AUL for Digital Initiatives and Collaborative Services and Research IT’s RDM Program Director, the incumbent will lead the University’s RDM Program to disseminate and preserve scholarship produced by UC Berkeley faculty, students and researchers. S/he will work in close cooperation with campus stakeholders including, academic departments, campus administrators, campus IT service providers, library staff and the UC California Digital Library in order to develop educational materials, deploy technologies, and provide direct assistance to UC Berkeley scholars on a broad range of topics related to Research Data Management.

The RDM coordinator will work in partnership with colleagues in the Scholarly Communication Office to ensure the provision and delivery of robust and appropriately structured services. Services offered by the RDM Program include consulting, guidance documentation, and training on a wide range of data-related activities and services. Research Data Management practices and services extend across the full lifecycle of activities related to research data, from the proposal and data management plan; through collaboration, sharing, and curation; to publication, citation, preservation, discovery and reuse.

Responsibilities:
● Administer a program of Research Data Management services provided by a team comprising members from across the UC Berkeley community including the University Library and Research IT (Office of the CIO), with connections to other campus partners.
● Manage team member contributions to the RDM program from across campus partners and provide program and project management expertise in supporting RDM efforts
● Coordinate program activities (consulting, guidance documentation, and training) to maximize the efficiency and delivery of high quality services to academic departments and the wider the campus research community.
● Design new RDM services and manage how these services are integrated into consulting, guidance, and training resources.
● Serve as a lead consultant on RDM services with faculty, graduate students, and research staff on their Research Data Management questions and develop education programs to support stakeholder needs
● Collaborate with campus partners in research offices, IT groups and academic departments to ensure that researchers and the campus are effectively stewarding research data assets, complying with requirements from funders and data providers, and gaining the full benefit of their research data.
● Monitor national and international trends and policy issues, informing and educating the UC Berkeley community of their significance and engage in initiatives that shape RDM locally and nationally.
● Organize events at UC Berkeley on relevant RDM topics.
● Engage in research related to RDM.

Qualifications
Minimum Basic Qualification at time of application:
• Advanced degree (MS, PhD, MA or equivalent degree) in a relevant research field

Additional Required Qualifications by start date of position:
● A minimum of one year experience managing an academic or research program of campus- wide or organization-wide scope, preferably focusing on research data management or scholarship emphasizing the role of research data.
● Experience providing guidance and training to researchers on a range of issues and services related to the research data lifecycle.
● Demonstrated knowledge of technical, legal, and information policy issues related to research data management.
● Demonstrated oral and written communication skills

Additional Preferred Qualifications:
● Demonstrated knowledge of research data management issues in research and/or university environments across an array of disciplines and contexts.
● Experience increasing awareness and understanding about research data management issues across a campus community, such as through instruction, informational materials, and events.
● Demonstrated interpersonal skills with the ability to establish productive collaborations with diverse constituencies, including faculty, students, administrators, consortial partners, and national organizations.
● Planning and leadership skills, with the ability to function independently, take initiative, and set goals and priorities in a dynamic changing environment.

Academic Administrators are entitled to two days per month of vacation leave, one day per month of sick leave, and all other benefits granted to non-faculty, non-Senate academic personnel.
