Digital Collections Archivist - The Bancroft Library

Assistant Librarian – Associate Librarian
$47,772 - $62,323 per annum, based upon qualifications

This is a full-time appointment available starting March 2017.

The University of California, Berkeley, is seeking a Digital Collections Archivist to digitally process various analog and digital collections that have been identified as priorities for digital processing. The successful candidate will have experience in digital collection processing of analog and born digital archival materials (digitization and digital curation), demonstrated understanding of archival arrangement and description and materials, familiarity with digital project management and web and new media strategies, familiarity with library standards (EAD, METS, MARC, MODS, etc.), and strong communication skills.

The Bancroft Library is one of the largest and most heavily used libraries of rare materials in the West. Its holdings include more than 600,000 volumes, 60 million manuscripts, 8.2 million photographs and other pictorial materials, 86,000 microforms, 3.2 million digital items, and 35,000 maps, as well as numerous other categories of unique material. The two largest collections are the Bancroft Collection of Western and Latin Americana and the Rare Books Collection. The archival and rare book materials of the Magnes Collection of Jewish Art and Life are also part of the Bancroft holdings. Bancroft is home to three research groups: the Oral History Center (formerly the Regional Oral History Office); the Mark Twain Papers; and the Center for the Tebtunis Papyri. The Bancroft Library is an active center of teaching and research. Supporting the programs of about 20 campus departments annually, it mounts a regular series of public exhibitions, roundtable lectures, and open houses. Responsibilities
The Digital Collections Archivist will be responsible for digitally processing identified analog and born digital collections, including accessioning/securing collections, arrangement and description, digitization, linking the resulting digital collections to existing finding aid descriptions, ensuring the creation and encoding of metadata in the finding aids and digital objects for delivery to the Online Archive of California and the UC3 preservation service, and providing for researcher access. The Digital Collections Archivist will report to the Associate Director and will serve as a work leader for library assistants and student library employees as needed. The Digital Collections Archivist will work in consultation with curators in the digital processing of collections. The Digital Collections Archivist will also work with the Principal Cataloger to update collection records in the bibliographic catalog.

UC Berkeley librarians are expected to participate in library-wide planning and governance, to work effectively in a shared decision-making environment and to be active professionally. Professional contributions beyond the primary responsibilities are required for advancement in the Librarian series. The successful candidate will show promise or evidence of such contributions.

Qualifications
Minimum Basic Qualification at time of application:
• MLS from an ALA-accredited institution, or equivalent degree.

Additional Required Qualifications by start date in position:
• Experience in digital collections processing (digitization and/or digital curation).
• Experience working with analog and born digital archival materials.
• Demonstrated understanding of archival arrangement and description.
• Familiarity with digital project management and web and new media strategies.
• Familiarity with Encoded Archival Description (EAD), Metadata Encoding and Transmission Standard (METS), Machine Readable Cataloging (MARC), and Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS).
• Demonstrated analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills.
• Willingness to work in a team environment.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Access and Excel.
• Ability to lift 40-pound boxes.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:
• Degree in history (especially US or Western US history).
• Experience in archival description and authoring of EAD finding aids and METS digital objects.
• Experience using WebGenDB, Archivists Toolkit, or similar digital content management system.
• Experience using Forensic Toolkit software.
