Position description

The Program in Celtic Studies at UC Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach undergraduate courses, should a need arise, in any of the following possible areas:

• Celtic Languages (Modern Irish, Medieval and Modern Welsh, Breton, Old & Middle Irish)
• Reading and Composition (in English on the works of Celtic writers)
• Celtic History/Culture, Including Medieval and/or Modern Mythology, Oral Tradition, Romanticism, Modern Celtic popular cultures, Celtic Christianity, and/or Folklore
• Celtic Literature (in original languages and in translation) including Irish Literature, Medieval Welsh and Arthurian Literature
• Celtic Linguistics
• Other topics in Celtic Studies

The number of positions hired from this pool will vary from semester to semester, subject to the needs and budget of the Program, and in some semesters may be zero. When an instructor is hired, the position will most likely be part time, but may range from 33% to 100% of full time employment, depending on the number of classes being taught.

Applications will be accepted and reviewed if/when needed through October 10, 2017. When a need arises for a Fall semester, we typically review applications in March, April or May; for a Spring or Summer semester, our review of applications is typically in October or November.

Positions typically start at the beginning of the semester (in mid-January for Spring Semester; in mid-August for Fall Semester),
and appointments may be renewable based on the Program’s need, funding, and on lecturer performance.

General Duties: In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), and interacting with students outside of class time via email and/or bCourses.

Minimal Qualification (required at time of application):

  • Completed Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent degree) is required to teach any language course
  • Completed Master’s degree (or equivalent degree) is required to teach any non-language course

Additional Qualifications (required by the employment start date):

  • Fluency in the English language
  • If being hired for a language course, fluency in the language being taught
  • For those who are not US citizens or permanent residents, a legal permit that allows work in the United States (such as a US visa that allows employment) is required by the start date of the position. The Program is unable to provide a visa/work permit.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or PhD (or equivalent degree/s) may be preferred, depending on course being taught.
  • Experience and demonstrated excellence in teaching at the college level in the U.S.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of literature and culture of the area.
  • Potential for successful attraction, advising and mentoring students.
  • If hired to teach language course, professional training in language teaching
  • If hired to teach R&C, demonstrated experience teaching reading and writing in English, and familiarity with UC Berkeley Reading & Composition requirements.

Salary: Commensurate with college teaching experience, in accordance with the current Unit-18 lecturer salary scale and its provisions. (The starting 100% full-time annual gross salary rate is currently $52,099.)
