Position description

The Berkeley Seismological Laboratory (BSL) seeks an Assistant or Associate Project Scientist to work on the ShakeAlert earthquake early warning (EEW) project. The successful candidate will monitor performance of the seismic and geodetic algorithms contributed by the BSL to ShakeAlert, ElarmS and GlarmS; identify performance issues; and develop and implement solutions. He or she will also monitor and manage the BARD network, the GNSS stations operated by the BSL, maintaining QC for the GNSS data, and ensuring that data products are made available in a timely fashion. The successful candidate will collaborate with colleagues within the BSL to coordinate both EEW and GNSS related implementation and operation activities, and will also represent the BSL in committees with partner organizations collaborating toward EEW implementation and operation, and GNSS operations. Project scientist tasks include writing and submitting interim and final reports, and contributing to the development of project proposals and budgets. Other activities include (a) developing and vetting quality assurance procedures for the data from the GNSS stations to support their flow into the EEW system; (b) coordinating with other collaborators to ensure the flow of data from all contributing stations into earthquake processing and EEW software and algorithms at locations across the West Coast; (c) using knowledge of geodesy, earthquakes and seismicity to contribute to the evaluation of performance of EEW algorithms of the BSL and others; (d) participating in the coordination of EEW-related activities across the West Coast; (e) interacting with EEW users and other stakeholders to operate and support improvements to the EEW system; (f) integrating EEW information and activities into the data collection and real-time processing that contribute to the BSL's regular earthquake information and data collection processes; and (g) participating in the identification, evaluation, selection and permitting of sites for new seismic and geodetic stations to support EEW and other earthquake monitoring activities. Because EEW activities are intermingled with other tasks at the BSL - like station operation & performance and earthquake monitoring - the Project Scientist will become familiar with and participate in all aspects of the BSL's operations and interact with the personnel involved, including providing input, suggestions and coordination required for improving EEW operations. The successful candidate will also participate in routine earthquake response activities at the BSL, which include earthquake response rotation.

At least 5 years of experience is required for appointment at the Associate Project Scientist level.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with real-time processing, earthquake early warning algorithms and processing using seismic and GNSS data.

APPOINTMENT
