Position description

The Niyogi Lab in the Department of Plant & Microbial Biology at the University of California at Berkeley has an opening for an Associate Specialist to study the regulation of photosynthesis and its improvement by optimizing the kinetics of recovery from photoprotection and/or photoinhibition.

The successful candidate will be responsible for performing laboratory research and data analysis using genetic, biochemical, physiological, and spectroscopic approaches to evaluate candidate genes (and combinations of genes) for their potential in improving photosynthesis.

Duties also include training and mentoring graduate students, postdocs, and other lab personnel in experimental techniques and data analysis, participation in group meetings and seminars, and preparation of research presentations and publications. The successful candidate will also assist in preparing grant proposals and progress reports.

Minimum Qualifications:
Candidates must have a Master’s, or equivalent degree, in Plant Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry or a related field at the
time of application.

Additional Qualifications:
3-5 years professional research experience, post-Master’s or equivalent degree, in genetics, biochemistry, and physiology of
photosynthesis, non-photochemical quenching, and photoinhibition by appointment start date.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with design and generation of gene expression constructs, transient and stable transformation of plants, measurement of photosynthesis and non-photochemical quenching, quantitative PCR analysis of RNA levels, immunoblot
analysis of proteins, and HPLC analysis of photosynthetic pigments by appointment start date.

Appointment: The targeted start date for this position is October 1, 2016. The appointment is for twelve (12) months. This is a full time appointment.

Salary and Benefits:
Salary range is $53,928 – $61,848/annually, depending on prior experience and qualifications. Generous benefits are
