The History-Social Science Project at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a sixty percent (60%) time Academic Coordinator, rank I with a step ranging from 4-8 based on experience. The expected start date is November 9, 2015.

The UC Berkeley History-Social Science Project is one of seven sites in the California History- Social Science Project (chssp.ucdavis.edu), headquartered at the University of California, Davis, and one of 84 discipline-based programs in the California Subject Matter Projects, administered by the University of California, Office of the President (UCOP – csmp.ucop.edu).

The Academic Coordinator supports professional development in history for K-12 grade level teachers participating in University of California, Berkeley History-Social Science Project (UCBHSSP) programming. This is a fiscal year, part-time appointment of 24 hours a week.
The Academic Coordinator works closely with the Director of the UCBHSSP and the site’s Director of Teacher Development, as well as school-specific administrations and department leadership, to provide professional development that meets the needs of students, teachers, and the school/district/CMO. The Academic Coordinator is expected to be knowledgeable in educational technologies and their applications to teacher and student collaboration and research in the history discipline, and able to lead professional development programming with a technology focus.

The Academic Coordinator also provides support for (a) the improvement of content-specific education, with particular attention paid to the teaching of English learners and low literacy students; (b) the improvement of teacher understanding and ability to implement state Common Core and content standards by developing content knowledge, strategies for effective delivery, and academic literacy skills; (c) and the development of long-term school-university partnerships focused on the teaching of the discipline of history and the improvement of student achievement. The Academic Coordinator reports to the Director of the University of California, Berkeley History-Social Science Project. The position requires travel to school sites and some evening and weekend obligations. It is expected that the candidate work remotely with biweekly meetings with UCBHSSP staff at UC Berkeley. Regular access to a car is required. This position’s renewal after the initial year is dependent on available funding.

Minimum Basic Requirements: Bachelor of Arts or equivalent degree by the time of application.

Preferred qualifications include: Teaching experience in history or a related secondary social science field. Highly proficient in educational technology tools that provide collaboration opportunities for teachers and students. Experience leading professional development programs or coursework to increase content knowledge and pedagogical ability of teachers. In- depth understanding of discipline-specific student literacy development. Knowledge and understanding of current Standards and Framework, including the Common Core Standards in English/Language Arts. Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative team setting. Excellent oral, written, and especially, interpersonal communication skills. Basic computer skills (MS Office). A California Teaching Credential. Experience working in low-performing schools, and familiarity with issues of diversity and equity in history-social science education. In-depth understanding of the CHSSP’s Building Academic Literacy through History programming and familiarity with the specific literacy programming offered by the UC Berkeley History-Social Science Project.

Title and Compensation: Academic Coordinator I. Salary range based on full-time salary rate of $55,608 - $67,092, commensurate with experience. Actual salary will be 60% of the full-time salary rate.
