Position description

Salary: $70,985-$78,353
Start Date: October 19, 2015 (approximate)
This is a one-year, full-time (100%) appointment, subject to renewal.

Overview:
Berkeley Law invites applications for the position of Coordinator of Advocacy and Student- Initiated Legal Services Projects (SLPS)/Pro Bono Services Programs.

This is a 100% time, one-year term contract position, with the possibility of renewal contingent upon satisfactory performance. This position is primarily engaged in the coordination of academic programs, but may consist of a separate but accompanying teaching appointment as assigned, that will jointly constitute full time employment throughout the year.

Berkeley Law offers a robust program in Experiential Education, through which students engage in the development of their legal skills by working on “real world” cases under the close supervision of faculty, staff, and outside practitioners. Students gain hands on experience through participation in legal clinics, skills classes, field placements, Student-Initiated Legal Services Projects (SLPS), and Advocacy Competitions, among other programs.

SLPS operates as Berkeley Law’s Pro Bono Program, which serves as an introduction to Berkeley Law’s experiential education program for most Berkeley Law first-year students, and provides leadership opportunities to the upper-division students who run the Programs. The Advocacy Competitions introduce students to litigation and transactional skills through simulated cases and problems across a wide range of subject matter areas. The Competitions program has grown from a handful of student-supervised competitions to almost 100 students participating in outside competitions each year, and more than that participating in internal competitions. Berkeley Law teams routinely win the local and national trial, appellate, alternative dispute resolution, and international competitions in which they compete.

For more information about SLPS visit our website at https://www.law.berkeley.edu/student- life/student-initiated-legal-services-projects-slps/. For more information about our Advocacy Competitions, please visit https://www.law.berkeley.edu/student-life/student- organizations/board-of-advocates/.

The Coordinator will operate as a part of a team that focuses on public interest and service learning activities at the law school, and works to raise the profile of pro bono both within the law school and in the larger community. If needed, the Coordinator may be expected to teach a one-unit course related to advocacy competitions during the academic year.
