Position description

Assistant or Associate Project Scientist position in the California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences

Overview:
The Herr Laboratory focus is on engineering innovation for analysis of complex biological systems – as is required to address questions important to both fundamental biological systems and applied clinical research. We employ a combination of approaches drawn from chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering with strong foundations in biology, materials science, and analytical chemistry. In essence, we strive to advance the “mathematization” of biology and medicine.

An Assistant or Associate Project Scientist position is open in Professor Amy Herr’s laboratory in the California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences at the University of California, Berkeley.

Responsibilities:
The position will lead bioengineering research efforts to design, fabricate, prototype, micro-analytical protein measurement tools. Subsequently, the position will implement, test and analyze those microfluidic systems. The research efforts involve measurement of biomarkers in single cells, with determination of the potential for those same biomolecules to have a clinical impact. The incumbent will primarily focus on cancer-related protein measurements [ex: breast, prostate, brain]. In support of that assay and device research, the incumbent will design and implement software algorithms, as well as participate in background research, design of experiments, design and fabrication of micro-devices, assay design and validation, data collection, and analysis and interpretation of results; will prepare written and oral summary reports [internal and external]; and will lead technical collaborations. The incumbent will engage in independent and collaborative research in the California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences [QB3] and externally; will attend and actively support scientific seminars, workshops, working team meetings and other venues for presentations of results and will develop and maintain collaborative research relationships; will pursue publication of research in peer-reviewed journals; and may pursue additional funding opportunities consistent with existing and future research programs and goals.

Minimum Basic Qualifications required at the time of application:
Doctor of Philosophy [Ph.D.] or foreign equivalent in Chemistry, Biology Bioengineering or a closely related discipline;

Additional Qualifications required by start date:
Experience in a sensors or diagnostics laboratory;
Expertise in experimental design, single-cell protein analysis, micro-fabrication, oncology, and quantitative data analysis tools;
Experience in single-cell protein analysis, oncology, and human biospecimen handling and storage;
Demonstrated research potential evidenced through peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and/or patent applications;

Preferred Qualifications Desired:
Post-Doctoral training in single-cell western blotting, clinical standards, quantitative imaging, and breast cancer research;
Expected to work independently and as part of a team, be self-motivated, have critical thinking abilities and good written and oral communication skills;

Our Facilities: The candidate will work in Stanley Hall Laboratory led by Professor Herr at the University of California, Berkeley.

Yearly Salary Range: Salary will be commensurate with experience; This is a full-time, two-year position with the possibility of renewal.
