Position description

The Doreen B. Townsend Center for the Humanities at the University of California, Berkeley invites applications for the position of associate director (Academic Coordinator II to begin November 2015). The appointment is a full‐time, two‐year renewable appointment, with expectation of continued employment.

The mission of the Center, one of the most active and distinguished in the United States, is to promote interdisciplinary research and teaching in the humanities, arts, and related disciplines on the Berkeley campus, and build a community of researchers–from undergraduates to senior faculty– that is strong within itself and also plays a productive and important role both nationally and internationally. The Center organizes lecture series, sponsors graduate seminars, offers fellowships to graduate students and faculty and directs two major curricular enrichment programs for undergraduates.

Reporting to the faculty director, the associate director plays a key role in planning and facilitating programmatic directions set by the director; administers and develops ongoing programs, promotes the research of individual faculty and groups engaged in humanities and humanities‐related problems, and ensures the dissemination of humanities research both within and beyond the campus. The associate director also oversees all Townsend Center programs, financial management and planning, human resources administration and operations, including developing and managing institutional partnerships and collaborations. The associate director represents the Townsend Center to faculty and humanities institutions within the university; acts as liaison with affiliated institutions, foundations, and sponsors; advises the director on matters pertaining to institutional strategies, and programmatic priorities; participates in all significant policy‐making discussions and serves as a non‐voting member on selection committees; assists in grant writing and is responsible for grant reporting.

Minimum qualifications: The successful applicant will have a Ph.D. or equivalent in the humanities or a related field by the time of application. Preferred qualifications: Excellent writing and communication skills; background in and understanding of
humanities research; proven ability to oversee research activity in a multi‐
disciplinary environment; substantial experience in program and event management, personnel supervision and fiscal management, preferably in a university or non‐profit setting; excellent organizational and interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with staff, communicate with faculty and engage in broad interdisciplinary discussions within and outside the university.

Salary Range: $79,836 to $122,760 depending upon experience and qualifications.
