Position description

The California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences ‐ Berkeley (QB3‐Berkeley) MacroLab is a high‐throughput core facility offering high‐throughput and custom cloning and protein purification services to both UC and non‐UC clientele. We are searching for a Project Scientist [Payroll title: Assistant/Associate] for the QB3 MacroLab core facility. The Project Scientist will be responsible for advising MacroLab clientele on large‐scale, complex cloning and other projects, working closely with the QB3 MacroLab Director and under the guidance of the MacroLab Faculty Director.

The candidate will work to provide the established services and have an active role in gauging and deciding future services. The candidate will engage research labs and core facilities to identify consulting and collaboration opportunities, extending the client base. The candidate must have a broad knowledge of how recombinant DNA is used in diverse platforms, and provide his or her expertise in these areas to clientele, either as an advisor or performing the work within the MacroLab. In many cases DNA cloning projects will be executed using high‐ throughput liquid handling equipment. The candidate will also contribute to the research and development of facility services and reagents.

Job Duties
o Carry out independent collaborations to design and execute all aspects of cloning and plasmid design. Cloning projects will involve plasmids from many different organisms with various purposes.
 Provide one‐on‐one advice and teach MacroLab clientele in cloning techniques.
 Provide workshops in large‐scale cloning technique.
 Keep current with published literature concerning new developments in molecular biology techniques.
 Maintain stocks of DNA (plasmids), enzymes, competent cells, and provides QC for them.
 Maintain accurate laboratory records and provide clients with detailed reports.
o Program/run multiple types of laboratory equipment such as liquid handling robots.
o Assist with laboratory system administration duties.
o Contribute to development of new reagents and services.

Basic/Minimum Qualifications required at time of application

• The candidate must have a PhD or equivalent degree in a molecular biology field that involves DNA cloning and protein purification.

Additional Qualifications required by start date

• Knowledge and experience (5+ years) of gene cloning and plasmid design, including understanding how these methodologies can be best implemented to benefit downstream applications used in the fields of biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology, and genetics. Must be familiar with PCR and cloning methods including Gateway, Gibson, LIC and/or SLIC.

• Demonstrated communication skills with the knowledge to understand the scientific needs of researchers from a variety of molecular biology related fields.

• Hands‐on experience with setup, running, and maintenance of automated high‐ throughput instrumentation.

Preferred Qualifications
• Programming skills (e.g., scripting, database, laboratory robotics software).

Salary:
The salary range is $56,200 ‐ $68,900 plus benefits. Salary will be commensurate with experience. This is a one‐year, full‐time position with possibility of renewal, with approximate start date of July 1, 2015.
