Position description

The Human Rights Program (HRP) at UC Berkeley seeks a dynamic administrator to serve as Executive Director. The HRP combines research and teaching elements: the program organizes a variety of programming on human rights issues, and it houses the undergraduate Human Rights Minor. The Executive Director will administer both the undergraduate Minor and the HRP’s academic activities and will take lead responsibility for longer-range program development, including fundraising, and public outreach.

Reporting to the academic co-directors of the Human Rights Program, the Executive Director will advise the undergraduate students enrolled in the Human Rights Minor. In recent years, around 10-12 students per year have graduated from UC Berkeley with a minor in Human Rights. The Executive Director will be responsible for recruiting students to the minor; tracking student progress through the program; and organizing the Human Rights Minor Thesis Conference, in which undergraduate students present their research. The Executive Director will also be responsible for the development of the Minor’s teaching curriculum.

Located within Social Science Matrix, UC Berkeley’s flagship center for basic research and public engagement in the social sciences, the Executive Director will be responsible for coordinating human rights activities on campus. To this end, the Executive Director will initiate and curate a Matrix Research Stream in Human Rights. The Executive Director will take responsibility for the design and implementation of a speaker series in human rights; the organization of ad hoc events and seminars; and coordination with other campus units to produce a curriculum of research-oriented events on human rights.

Beyond day-to-day administration, the Executive Director will be responsible for longer-term program development. In this role, the Executive Director will develop a strategic plan for the Human Rights Program; liaise with Matrix and (as necessary) the Development Office to identify and pursue extramural funding opportunities; and represent the Human Rights Program at conferences and other off-campus events. The ideal candidate should be able to articulate a compelling vision for the Human Rights Program as an interdisciplinary hub for research, teaching, and public engagement.

Basic Qualifications Required:
• A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Social Science or related Humanities.

Additional Required Qualifications:
• Prior experience in academic administration and development.

• The ability to write in clear, compelling prose, including for grant applications.

Preferred Qualifications:
• A record of active scholarly research and publication in human rights.
• A Ph.D. degree (or equivalent) in Social Science or related Humanities is preferred and will be required if the candidate wishes to apply independently to be a Lecturer to teach courses at UC Berkeley academic departments and teaching programs. Lecturer appointment is not part of this position.

This is a two-year contract position at 50% time, with possibility of extension. Salary range for the title is $48,048 to $63,012 plus benefits, depending on qualifications and experience. The expected start date is July 15, 2015.
