Position description

The Department of Psychology is a large, complex department within the College of Letters and Science (Division of Social Sciences). The Department includes over 54 active faculty and emeriti members, 25 career staff, approximately 7 temporary instructors, a number of visiting scholars and postdocs each year as well as a large cadre of Graduate Student Instructors and Graduate Student Researchers.

The fundamental missions of the University, teaching, research and community service, are all met by the Department. Our teaching program is quite large. Psychology is an impacted major with 800 undergraduates and Department courses serve approximately 4000 students each semester as well as a large summer sessions offering each year. The Department has approximately 110 graduate students pursuing doctoral degrees in five specialized sub-fields. In research, the Department supports the work of 35 life science labs. Psychology is closely linked with several major research institutes/ORU's on campus: The Institute of Human Development, the Institute of Personality and Social Research, the Institute of Cognitive and Brain Science; and the Helen Wills Neuroscience Institute and works in collaboration with their administration to meet the needs of our faculty. Our outpatient clinic serves the surrounding community by providing vital, low cost psychiatric treatment and functions as a recharge unit.

Responsibilities: The Research Scientists will be involved in multi-modal neuroimaging studies of sleep and human brain function. Reporting to the Scientific Director of the laboratory, this position will spearhead independent research projects in human sleep research and cognitive neuroscience.

Minimum/Basic Qualifications Required: Ph.D. or equivalent in Psychology/Neuroscience or a related field at time of application.

Additional Qualifications: A detailed understanding of cutting edge brain imaging methodologies (MRI, PET, EEG), together with extensive experience in sleep polysomnographic recordings, combined with a background in cognitive neuroscience.

Preferred Qualifications: The candidate should have excellent written and oral communication skills and a proven track record of working collaboratively in the field of sleep research. Projects will span a wide range of areas, and the candidate must be flexible, creative, and able to master new techniques as needed.

Appointment: The initial appointment will be made at 100% time for 1 year with a start date of approximately May 1, 2015. Thereafter, 1 year annual appointment renewable based on satisfactory performance and availability of extramural funding and support.

Salary: Associate Specialist ($52,344.00 – $63,012.00 annually)
