Position description

The Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Junior Specialist I-II in the Clark Lab at 100% with a start date in late Spring 2015.

Position Description:
In the current project, bio-inspired protein engineering will be used to construct new self- assembling protein structures from simple polypeptide precursors, which could in turn be used for myriad applications ranging from drug delivery vehicles to biomolecular sensors and switches to nanomolecular scaffolds and templates.

The Junior Specialist will report to the PI and will collaborate closely with the postdoctoral scholars and graduate students in the lab. The Junior Specialist will be performing experiments, optimizing experimental methods, analyzing and screening experimental results, and preparing resulting data for publication. The results provided by the Junior Specialist will facilitate the completion of a larger number of experimental projects by the lab. The incumbent will also assume some responsibility for ordering supplies and assisting with other aspects of lab management as needed.

Basic Qualifications:
• The minimum qualification required to be considered for the position is a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Biochemistry, Microbiology, Chemical Engineering or related field by time of application.

Additional Qualifications:
• Experience with recombinant protein expression in E. coil and/or Bacillus subtilis
• Experience with recombinant protein purification using FPLC in conjunction with affinity, ion exchange, or size-exclusion chromatography columns
• Experience with DNA manipulation techniques, including PCR, ligation, restriction digest, and site directed mutagenesis
• Familiarity with typical laboratory supplies and reagents
• Familiarity with or experience in an academic research environment
• Familiarity with standard software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
• Familiarity with data analysis

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience with protein directed evolution RANK: Junior Specialist I – II
SALARY: $ 36,432- 38,856 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
