The Department of Scandinavian at UC Berkeley invites applications for a pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach courses, should a need arise, in Reading and Composition. Our Reading and Composition (R&C) courses are taught in English, on primarily Scandinavian-related topics in film, literature, and/or culture.
The number of positions hired from this pool will vary from semester to semester, subject to the needs of the Department, and in some semesters will be zero. When a lecturer is hired to teach R&C, the appointment will range from 40% (for one R&C course) and up, depending on the number of courses being taught.
For any Fall 2015 needs, the initial review date will be April 2, 2015; applications received by this date will receive full consideration for the fall 2015 semester.
Applicants may be selected from this pool for two calendar years. This posting will remain open through March 2, 2017. For a Fall semester, the initial review date is typically in March or April. Published review dates will be updated as needed. Positions typically start at the beginning of the semester (in mid-January for Spring Semester; in mid-August for Fall Semester), and appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance.
In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), and interacting with students via email.
Basic Qualification (required by date of application):
• Completion of all Ph.D. (or equivalent) degree requirements except the dissertation
Additional Qualification (required by expected employment start date):
• Completed Ph.D (or equivalent)
• Demonstrated experience teaching reading and writing in English
• Familiarity with UC Berkeley Reading & Composition course requirements
• Knowledge of Scandinavian literature, history, and/or culture
• Commensurate with college teaching experience, in accordance with the current Unit- 18 lecturer salary scale and its provisions
