Position description

The Institute for Research on Labor and Employment, UC Berkeley is seeking candidates for appointment as Associate Director of the Don Vial Center for Employment in the Green Economy.

The Associate Chair of the Don Vial Center will work with the Chair and stakeholders to develop a research and education agenda for the Center. The Associate Chair will direct research, education and outreach for the Center, supervise other researchers, and conduct research. Appointee will work with policy-makers, researchers, and labor, industry, environmental and low-income stakeholders. Appointee will oversee, manage, and plan research and/or implementation projects addressing jobs and workforce issues related to climate policy in California and the nation. Appointee will assist in proposal writing, represent the Center to the public and the media, and make public presentations to stakeholder organizations, unions, and policy makers on climate policy and workforce issues. Appointee will contribute to written reports and articles based on Center research.

Minimum Qualification required at time of application:
Master’s degree or equivalent in public policy, economics, sociology, or a related field.

Additional Required Qualifications:
• 5 years of experience working on issues related to jobs and the environment.
• 7-10 years of post-graduate experience conducting policy research, program implementation, project management and/or management experience, demonstrating leadership in a social justice arena that addresses jobs and environment.
• Demonstrated qualitative and/or quantitative skills and experience in data analysis.
• Demonstrated writing skills geared toward policy research reports.
• Experience making presentations.

Preferred Qualifications:
• A background in industrial relations is especially valuable.
• A background in workforce development is valuable.
• Relationships with California stakeholders in labor and climate is valuable.
• Issue expertise in both labor and energy/climate policy across a variety of sectors, such as renewable energy, energy efficiency, etc. is especially valuable.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to work well with university faculty, staff and students, policy makers, advocates and industry stakeholders as well as labor leaders and rank and file workers.

To apply
Position will be full time (100%) for one year, with the possibility of extension depending on performance and availability of funding. The salary range is $52,344 - $83,184. Salary will be commensurate with experience. Position includes benefits.
