The Labor Occupational Health Program (LOHP) is a public service program of the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health (COEH) at UC Berkeley’s School of Public Health. LOHP works to prevent illness and injury in the workplace and raise awareness of the social and economic costs of hazardous workplace conditions for individuals, communities, businesses, and the environment. We are committed to serving the needs of workers and communities most at risk, including low wage, immigrant workers, youth and communities of color, with the goal of educating and empowering workers and communities to take an active role in making workplaces safe, healthy, dignified and just. LOHP provides participatory, action-oriented training, develops educational materials, conducts participatory research, consults on the development of workplace standards and policies and facilitates interaction and learning among researchers, students and the community.

Job Description:

The Coordinator of Public Programs will focus on developing programs with a special emphasis on low wage workers, immigrant workers and youth; building the capacity of worker leaders, unions and community organizations to promote and address health and safety at work; and, creating strong partnerships with labor and worker centers. Duties include:

Coordinate LOHP’s labor services outreach program to develop and maintain strong networks with labor. Research and address priority health and safety issues.

Plan, implement and evaluate training programs in English and Spanish on a range of health and safety issues: help define overall program goals; conduct needs assessments; identify and collaborate with project partners; define recruitment strategies; develop training plans. Training programs include direct worker training and ‘train-the-trainer’ workshops.

Plan and implement outreach and education efforts in a variety of settings to engage workers, unions and community organizations in health and safety efforts.

Help coordinate LOHP’s annual Young Workers’ Leadership Academy, designed to increase youth leaders’ abilities to develop and implement activities promoting safe jobs for youth.

Write fact sheets, training materials, and reports, in English and Spanish.

Participate in funding development; including conceptualizing potential projects and participating in writing grant proposals.

Required Qualifications at the time of application:

A master’s degree in Public Health or related degree plus at least 3-5 years of experience, or equivalent professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience designing and implementing participatory training programs in a community agency or health education setting.

Demonstrated excellent communication and writing skills in English and Spanish. Demonstrated writing skills in the area of curriculum development.
Experience planning and conducting outreach programs to labor and community organizations Knowledge of occupational health and safety is desirable though not required.

Like most academic positions at a university, this position, while likely to be “re- funded” annually, is subject to reappointment each year.
