Position description

The Department of Theater, Dance & Performance Studies (TDPS) at the University of California, Berkeley is generating an applicant pool of qualified candidates to direct or choreograph within our annual production season. Applicant pool may also be eligible for consideration as temporary instructors to teach directing (courses TH 162, Th 163), or choreography (courses Th 146A,B).

Production is an integral part of our curriculum, and provides learning opportunities for student performers, designers, stage managers, and technical theater practitioners. We produce 4-8 shows per year, across a range of styles and genres designed to reinforce the skills taught in other parts of our curriculum. In any given academic year, we are likely to need 1 external theatrical director, 1 instructor for directing course and 2-3 external choreographers.

TDPS offers “Choreography: Solo and Duet Forms”, “Choreography: Group Forms”, and “Stage Directing: Fundamentals”. Qualified candidates may be eligible to teach more than one of these courses.

Appointments may begin in August 2014, and the applicant pool will remain in place for two calendar years.

Basic qualifications: A relevant graduate degree and/or professional experience in theater directing or choreography is required at time of application.

Additional Qualifications: Production experience within a university or conservatory setting is strongly preferred. Experience with teaching/directing/choreography in a university or conservatory setting in the subject areas is preferred.

Annual salary rate starting at $45,975, with exact salary determined based on past college- level teaching experience.(Directorial and choreographic assignments are a fraction of this annual salary rate)
