Political Economy

The International and Area Studies Academic Program (IASAP) at the University of California, Berkeley is generating an applicant pool of qualified temporary instructors to teach courses in World History, Political Economy (Classical, Contemporary, and Historical Context), Global Studies and/or Interdisciplinary Research Methodologies should an opening arise. Screening of applicants begins immediately and will continue as needed. Applicants will be selected from this pool for two calendar years until March 14, 2016; some appointments may begin in the 2014 fall semester. Positions may range from 33% to 100% time per academic semester.

The International and Area Studies Academic Program offers six innovative and interdisciplinary undergraduate majors: Political Economy, Peace & Conflict Studies, Development Studies, Asian Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, and Latin American Studies. In addition, it houses 3 interdisciplinary graduate programs: a concurrent MA in International & Area Studies, and graduate groups in Asian Studies and Latin American Studies.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION: Teaching one or more of the following courses: a) World History: a survey course in modern world history, with an emphasis on political economy. b) Classical Theories of Political Economy; c) Contemporary Theories of Political Economy; d) historical context courses for students in the Political Economy major; e) Interdisciplinary Research Methodologies. This core methods class for IAS majors has the mandate to train students in a wide range of social science methodologies, to teach them how to relate different theories to methods, and to engage them in research design and a capstone experience. There is some flexibility in the substantive and regional areas that might be covered by this position. In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, and preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus).

MINIMUM/BASIC QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: The minimum qualification required to be considered an applicant for the position is the completion of all degree requirements except the dissertation.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: PhD (or equivalent) by position start date in history, political science, economics, sociology, geography or a related field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: A commitment to and experience with undergraduate teaching preferred.

SALARY: $47,584 minimum full-time annual salary base. Actual salary base would be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Minimum appointment is for one course at 33% per semester or 17% FTE annualized. The search committee is open to offering either multiple positions or hiring a candidate qualified to teach multiple courses.

Appointments for fall semester are usually reviewed in April and for spring semester in October.
